ST. LOUIS — A bus passenger is suing a transit company for allegedly failing to protect its passengers.

Bettie Douglas filed a complaint on July 12 in the St. Louis City Circuit Court against Bi-State Development Agency d/b/a Metro, alleging that the defendant failed its duty to exercise care while operating and maintaining its transport vehicles.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that she was a passenger on the defendant's bus on Feb. 18, 2016 when the driver reportedly slammed on the brakes while she was walking toward the back of the bus to find a seat, causing her to fall violently onto her back. As a result, Douglas claims she suffered physical injuries and incurred expenses for medical care and services.

The plaintiff holds the defendant responsible for allegedly not making sure all passengers were properly seated before moving the bus, ensuring that all passengers were secure and seated before moving the bus or warning passengers of the abrupt stop.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks judgment that is fair and reasonable under the circumstances, plus pre-judgment interest, costs expended and for such other relief as may be appropriate under the circumstances. She is represented by Brent E. Labovitz of Defeo & Kolker LLC in Clayton.
