ST. LOUIS - Legal experts following the Johnson & Johnson talcum powder lawsuits in St. Louis say that even in the face of Monday’s declared mistrial of one of the cases on jurisdictional grounds, many of the hundreds of other cases will drag on “because so much money is involved.”
JEFFERSON CITY — Just under a quarter of all states now have laws requiring plaintiffs in asbestos lawsuits to fully disclose claims they may have filed with asbestos trusts, a trend that tort reform advocates see as a step in the right direction.
St. Louis is the fourth-most popular court system for asbestos lawsuits, with several factors earning the city a designation as a maturing jurisdiction, according to a recent analysis of 2016 filings by KCIC, a Washington, D.C.-based consulting firm.
A bill aimed at rehabilitating Missouri’s reputation as a “judicial hellhole” and magnet for frivolous lawsuits passed the Missouri House of Representatives this month, but not before a GOP lawmaker and trial attorney tried to amend the measure they said was overkill.
JEFFERSON CITY — The Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry said it is glad to see that the U.S. House of Representatives has passed the Fairness in Class Action Litigation and Furthering Asbestos Claim Transparency Act of 2017.
