ST. LOUIS – Attorney Adam E. Miller has joined the law firm of Capes Sokol as a shareholder of the company.
Miller comes to Capes Sokol following the successful 2014 case of Jacquelin Smith et al. v. Monsanto Co. et al., where he defended Monsanto against three plaintiffs who claimed they developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma from polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) produced by the company.
In this nationally recognized case, Miller was able to return a verdict in favor of the defense after a four-week trial in the Los Angeles Superior Court. He has also tried a variety of other cases with similar claims in both Los Angeles County and St. Louis County, Missouri.
“Adam’s relationship with Monsanto has allowed him to master areas of expertise that few general practitioners have the luxury to develop,” Jeffrey A. Cohen, managing shareholder at Capes Sokol, told the Record. “The matters he has handled have required the mastery of a variety of medical and scientific disciplines that are applicable to the litigation practice at Capes Sokol. In addition, he has addressed in his practice the complexities of mass torts, class actions, and ADR proceedings that apply to Capes Sokol matters across the board.”
Miller brings 25 years of experience to Capes Sokol. He has represented a slew of clients from national and regional companies to manufacturers and industrial users of chemicals in personal injury cases, complex mass torts, and class action product liability litigation.
“I am excited about what this move means for my client relationships and for Capes Sokol,” Miller told the Record. “Capes Sokol provides my national clients with highly talented lawyers capable of taking on complex litigation matters in venues across the country coupled with a nimble firm that can address client demands in a fast, cost-effective manner.”
Capes Sokol is just as enthusiastic to have Miller aboard, as Cohen said: “We are delighted to have a lawyer with Adam’s breadth of experience in complex litigation who is dedicated to excellent client service and achieving superior results. Under his leadership and guidance, we look forward to Adam helping develop those attributes in a new generation of Capes Sokol lawyers.”
In his new role as shareholder Miller, will primarily focus on clients’ defense as he has done in the past, with an emphasis on complex product liability matters across the country.
“Adam has developed the reputation as skilled in trial practice and in the development of scientific and medical defenses for some of his clients’ most challenging matters,” Cohen said. “Adam has also practiced in areas of intellectual property and commercial litigation, and we look forward to Adam applying his talents in these practice areas to existing Capes Sokol clients.”
Miller graduated with his juris doctorate from Washington University School of Law in 1990 and received his undergraduate degree in 1987 from Northwestern University.
Capes Sokol has also announced that three paralegals have joined the product liability defense practice as well as the addition of a new trusts and estates practice group, three lateral attorneys and a new associate, all within the last six months.
Capes Sokol is based in St. Louis and has 30 attorneys. It was founded in 2001.
