Patient accuses St. Louis University Hospital of negligence

Medical malpractice 05

ST. LOUIS — A patient is suing SSM-SLUH Inc., which does business as St. Louis University Hospital, and St. Louis University over alleged negligence by medical providers.

Toniann Meyer Lange filed a complaint on Oct. 12 in the St. Louis Circuit Court against the defendants, alleging that they failed to exercise standard care and skill required of medical providers and facilities.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that on Nov. 19, 2015, she was a patient at the defendants' facility, and while in the process of being transferred from her bed to a standing position, she was not secured properly in a gait belt and was partially dropped. As a result of the incident, the plaintiff suffered permanent and serious injury to her right shoulder, and the effects are painful and disabling, according to the complaint.

The plaintiff holds SSM-SLUH Inc. and St. Louis University, which does business as SLUCare, responsible because the defendants allegedly failed to properly secure the gait belt, failed to provide utmost care despite knowing of the plaintiff's high-risk condition and failed to use rehabilitative devices after the plaintiff's injury.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks judgment against defendants for damages, plus costs, interest, and further relief as the court deems just. She is represented by S. Lee Patton of Lee Patton Law in Kirkwood, Mo.
