ST. LOUIS — A consumer is suing Educational Credit Management Corp., ECMC and Educational Management Group, alleging that they engaged in abusive and deceptive debt collection practices related to student loans.
Sharhonda Shahid filed a complaint on Oct. 10 in the St. Louis Circuit Court against the defendants, alleging that they violated the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that as a result of the defendants' conduct, she has suffered financial harm and will continue to be harmed unless the court restrains the defendants. The plaintiff holds Educational Credit Management Corp., ECMC and Educational Management Group responsible because the defendants allegedly failed to provide documented evidence of debt validation, denied her request for a hearing hearing and served her employer with a garnishment order, compelling it to withhold 15 percent of her disposable income.
The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks an order staying the defendants' garnishment attempt, quashing such garnishment and producing any documents regarding the original debt. She is represented by herself.
