ST. LOUIS – The owner of a stolen vehicle alleges the city of St. Louis recovered the vehicle in 2016 and the city did not notify her of it until August of this year.

Shameka Hughes filed a complaint on Oct. 10 in the St. Louis Circuit Court against the city of St. Louis alleging deprivation of property without due process and other counts.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that in January 2016, plaintiff's 2014 Hyundai automobile was stolen and she reported it to the police. The suit states the vehicle was recovered the following month and the vehicle was towed to the defendant's impound lot on Hall Street.

She alleges she was not notified by the defendant that the vehicle had been seized and recovered until August. She alleges she was required to pay storage fees and prolonged storage left physical damage to the vehicle.

The plaintiff holds the city of St. Louis responsible because the defendant allegedly took possession and control of her vehicle for 30 months without notifying her.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks damages in an amount that will fully and fairly compensate her, attorney's fees, costs and all other relief that shall be deemed meet and proper. She is represented by Gregory G. Fenlon in St. Louis.
