Shook Hardy & Bacon LLP issued the following announcement on Dec. 2.

The Kansas City Sports Commission & Foundation (KCSCF) has selected Shook Attorney Bailey Samuel to join its Emerging Leaders Advisory Board effective in December. Samuel, who was (typically) the only girl on an all-boys ice hockey team from age three until she graduated high school in Montana and continued to play competitively at the college level, will serve on the board to help drive strategy, increase awareness and promote the benefits of amateur and professional sports in Kansas City. As an athlete, Samuel recognizes the importance sports can play in building women leadership and empowerment.

“There are a number of studies that show the majority of women CEOs in the Fortune 500 played sports in high school or college,” said Samuel. “In fact, Ernst & Young released a study in 2018 that revealed 94% of C-Suite women were, at one point, athletes. Athletics teaches competitors the value of working with a team and that translates well into the boardroom and the courtroom. It’s an honor to be selected for this role.”

Samuel is a product liability lawyer for Shook’s health, science and technology clients.

“Sports have taught me how to be competitive and confident, to stand up for myself and my team, and to be aggressive when I need to be, not only on the field and ice but now, in the courtroom,” said Samuel. “I’m excited about being part of a program that encourages young women to be strong and active, teaches them the importance of leadership, and empowers them to be content with who they are, no matter what field they chose to pursue.”
