Greensfelder Mourns Passing of Longtime Partner Bernie Huger

Microphone speech

Greensfelder Hemker & Gale PC. issued the following announcement on July 19.

Greensfelder mourns the loss of our friend and longtime colleague Bernard C. Huger, who passed away July 18, 2021, at age 76.

Mr. Huger, an officer at Greensfelder, led the firm’s Educational, Religious & Tax-Exempt Organizations practice. He was well-known for his dedication to representing church and religious organizations, as well as health care providers. His knowledge of the complex issues that impact nonprofits made him a valuable advisor for countless organizations over his distinguished career, including many religious orders and dioceses.

“Bernie’s contributions to Greensfelder during his long tenure here are too numerous to count, but suffice to say that his hard work played a critical role in elevating the firm to where it is, and laid a strong foundation for our future,” said Kevin T. McLaughlin, Greensfelder President and CEO. “He will always be part of the fabric of Greensfelder.”

Mr. Huger had the opportunity to work closely with his daughter Lucie Huger, also an officer at Greensfelder. They were fortunate to be able to collaborate as partners representing a diverse clientele, including many long-standing clients, some of whom were also represented by his father, Bernard J. Huger.

“My father practiced law with his father, and for over 19 years, my father and I have worked in close collaboration,” Lucie Huger said. “Each day was a gift. He was a marvelous mentor who helped me to grow and understand the complex and evolving issues impacting religious and nonprofit organizations. I look forward to continuing the work of my father and grandfather by providing excellent counsel to the clients we serve.”

Mr. Huger received his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1970. He joined Greensfelder in 1988. His professional accolades included being named as the St. Louis region’s Nonprofit/Charities Law Lawyer of the Year for 2021 by The Best Lawyers in America. He was involved in organizations including the National Diocesan Attorneys Association, Missouri Society of Health Care Attorneys, Missouri Bar Association, American Bar Association, and Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis.
