Appeals court to honor Judges Robin Ransom and Mary K. Hoff

 The Missouri Court of Appeals, Eastern District, will convene a special session of the Court en Banc to unveil portraits of Judges Robin Ransom and Mary K. Hoff at 2 p.m. Monday, November 14, 2022, at the Old Post Office, 815 Olive Street, St. Louis, Missouri. Judge Robin Ransom, a former Eastern District appellate judge, was appointed to the Supreme Court of Missouri in May 2021. Judge Mary K. Hoff retired effective August 2, 2021.

 A native St. Louisan, Ransom received her bachelor of arts degree from Douglass College-Rutgers University and is a graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law.  Prior to her appointment to the court of appeals in 2019, Ransom served as circuit judge for the  St. Louis circuit court for ten years and was a family court commissioner for six years. Prior to taking the bench, she was a staff attorney for the St. Louis County family court division and worked in the St. Louis County prosecuting attorney’s office and the St. Louis County public defender’s office. 

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Ransom finds time to serve her community, volunteering as a mentor for The Literacy Project. Ransom is a member of the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis, the Lawyers Association of St. Louis, and Mound City Bar Association. She bowls competitively, having bowled since the age of 11, and bowled a perfect game in February 2021 in the midst of the pandemic.

Hoff, another native St. Louisan, earned an education degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia and spent one year teaching social studies in rural mid-Missouri before attending law school at the University of Missouri and Saint Louis University School of Law. She joined the public defender’s office in 1978 and worked there for four years, followed by seven years in private practice. At the age of  36, she was appointed as a circuit judge in the 22nd Judicial Circuit (St. Louis). In December 1995, she was appointed to the Missouri Court of Appeals, Eastern District, serving as chief judge from July 1, 2000, through June 30, 2001, and again from January 1, 2021, through June 30, 2021.  he retired in 2021 after serving the Missouri judiciary for more than 30 years. 

Hoff has been very active in the legal community, holding memberships in the American Bar Association, American Judicature Society, The Missouri Bar, the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis, the Women Lawyers’ Association of Great St. Louis (past president) and the National Association of Women Judges. The Women’s Lawyers’ Association of Greater St. Louis bestowed its President’s Award to her in 2008, and she was inducted into the Saint Louis University School of Law Order of the Fleur de Lis Hall of Fame in 2016. In 2021, she  received the Women’s Justice Award for Public Service.
