Shelly Land recognized with Liberty Bell Award for service to the legal community

The Liberty Bell Award acknowledges a non-lawyer or non-legal organization engaged in public service activities that enhance the legal community or are dedicated to the advancement of justice.  Shelly Land will be presented the award Sept. 13, 2023, during The Missouri Bar Foundation & Public Service Awards Luncheon at the Annual Meeting of The Missouri Bar in Kansas City.

The 2023 Liberty Bell Award recipient, Shelly Land, has spent her career serving the legal community. She is the director of investigations for the Consumer Protection Unit of the Missouri Attorney General's Office, which investigates violations of the Missouri Merchandising Practices Act which prohibits deceptive, fraudulent, or unfair practices in the marketplace Land oversees 15 employees including hotline operators, advocates, and investigators in offices across the state. She previously served as the deputy director.  She has also served as the supervisor of the Economic Crime Unit for the Johnson County777 District Attorney’s Office where she established the first Consumer Protection Unit in Johnson County.  

“My passion is doing everything I can to help protect consumers, especially the vulnerable. I strive to work hard, along with a great team of people that share the same passion,” Land said. “Each day is different, but the goal is to make sure that there is a fair marketplace for businesses and that consumers are treated fairly.” 

Land currently serves on several panels including the Missouri Elder Abuse and Financial Exploitation Response Coordinating Committee and the Better Business Bureau Consumer Fraud Task Force. She is also a member of the National Association of Consumer Protection Investigators and has served on the International Association of Financial Crimes Investigators. 

“It is an honor to be recognized for the work that I do, but it is because of the team that I have,” Land said. “Their determination and motivation to help protect Missourians is our mission. We work as one, and we accomplish our goals together. So, by accepting the award for myself I accept it for the team.”
