Earlier this month the School of Law hosted the JSD Symposium: The Next Generation of Scholarship, sponsored by the Whitney R. Harris World Law Institute. JSD candidates from renowned universities across the U.S. gathered to present scholarship to their peers and receive feedback. The symposium also provided a unique opportunity to gain insight into doctoral-level research being conducted in the field of law.

Presentation themes included: corporate law, public international law, comparative disability law, intellectual property, cybersecurity class action suits, consumer privacy law, environmental law and the Paris Agreement, international cryptocurrency markets, sovereign rights protection law, and many more. Speakers represented nine U.S. universities and were citizens of 11 countries, offering a global perspective.

Novel discussion included a roadmap to integrating medical-legal clinics to promote safe legal care for individuals with HIV/AIDS in Uganda (Elsa Zawedde, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign), the social stigmatization on survivors of sexual crimes (Pavithra Rajendran, Notre Dame Law School – University of Notre Dame), and the implementation of international human rights treaties and protecting individuals with disabilities’ right to education in China (Mercy Renci Xie, Syracuse University).

Presenters and attendees shared rave reviews of the event, commenting on the valuable discussions, positive exchange of ideas, and overall organization.
