The estate of a woman says she died from an avoidable pressure ulcer and infection while living in a nursing home.

Edward Morrison, the surviving son of Betty Gates, filed his complaint in federal court against NHC Healthcare-Maryland Heights LLC, National Health Corporation and National Healthcare Corporation.

According to the complaint, Gates died from an avoidable pressure ulcer and infection developed at NHC Healthcare-Maryland Heights LLC, a skilled nursing facility located in Maryland Heights. Morrison claims the defendants failed to use reasonable care for Gates' safety while she was under their care and supervision.

The lawsuit also says National Healthcare Corporation was substantially engaged in the management and operation of NHC Healthcare-Maryland Heights LLC and had a direct impact on the care provided to all residents including Gates. Harrison alleges funds were diverted out of NHC Healthcare-Maryland Heights LLC that could have been used to hire enough nursing staff.

Morrison is seeking compensatory damages for wrongful death.
