Mizzou Law’s hosted the 20th annual Tim Heinsz Race on last weekend. Students, faculty, alumni and community members enjoyed clear skies, a catered meal and the usual lineup of foot and bike races all in support of student scholarships.
This year’s race set a new record, raising over $70,000 across all of the events.
Maura Corrigan, a 3L from St. Louis, served as a student organizer this year. She was inspired to volunteer her time by the lasting legacy of Dean Heinsz and Dean Devine, who she said made the Mizzou Law community what it is today.
“I was prompted to get involved based on the wonderful legacy that the named deans and individuals have left within the Mizzou Law community,” Corrigan said.
She added that the race also served as a way to connect with fellow students and faculty outside of the classroom.
“The day of the race is a great reminder of how lucky we are to have shared memories outside of the law school,” she said.
Hon. Josh Devine ‘07, a Division IV circuit judge locally in Boone County, said that he’s attended the race every year since he began law school in 2005. But the event took on a special significance for his family after his father Jim Devine, a beloved associate dean at the school, passed away in 2010.
The school added a dog walk in his honor that year in addition to the 5k, which is named after former dean Tim Heinsz. A bike ride was added in 2018 to honor the legacy of Bob Bailey, a current dean at the school.
“This is one of the best events of the year for my family,” Devine said. “It’s great to see this law school community come together and rally around three legends of the law school.”
Even if you missed your opportunity to participate in the race, it’s never too late to donate to student scholarships. The law school accepts contributions to the Tim Heinsz Scholarship Fund year-round — donate here.
