St. Charles County man alleges hospital, doctor failed to provide appropriate treatment for wife

Medical malpractice 08

ST. LOUIS — A St. Charles County man is suing a medical facility and its physician for wrongful death due to medical negligence.

Robert Born, individually and as plaintiff ad litem for Lisa Born filed a complaint May 12 in the St. Louis Circuit Court against Barnes-Jewish Hospital, The Washington University and Dr. Jeffrey Crippen, alleging that Crippen failed his duty to use the degree of skill and learning ordinarily used by skilful, prudent and careful members of the medical profession providing medical services.

According to the complaint, the plaintiffs allege that, on June 20, 2011, the plaintiff's wife, Lisa Born, was examined by Crippen for the first time as she was diagnosed before with nonalcohol-induced cirrhosis of the liver. She presented her medical records but did not undergo an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy procedure from 2012-15. On Jan. 16, 2016, Lisa Born died as a result of hemorrhagic shock after having an endoscopy procedure, which found clotted blood in her stomach.

As a result, Robert Born claims he suffered pecuniary losses and the loss of the services, consortium and companionship of his wife.

The plaintiff holds the defendants responsible because they allegedly failed to render the appropriate treatment to Lisa Born, failed to properly monitor the patient, failed to order proper tests to determine the status of the Lisa Born's esophagus and failed to administer an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.

The plaintiffs request a trial by jury and seek judgment in an amount in excess of $25,000 and for such other relief as is just and reasonable. They are represented by Zachary R. Pancoast of Rossiter and Brook LLC in St. Louis.
