Man says St. Louis VA hospital caused embolism in leg after surgery

Medical malpractice 03

ST. LOUIS — A St. Peters man is suing the federal government, alleging that medical negligence at a local VA hospital caused personal injuries.

William L. Rollins filed a complaint on June 14 in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri against the United States of America alleging that the defendant violated the Federal Tort Claims Act.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that, on Oct. 6, 2014, plaintiff underwent a left achilles tendon debridement with a plantar augmentation at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in St. Louis. Following his procedure, plaintiff claims he began having episodes of shortness of breath and lightheadedness that caused him to fall due to losing consciousness. He was later diagnosed at Barnes-Jewish Hospital as having extensive bilateral pulmonary emboli and will require doses of aspirin for the rest of his life as the thrombus in his leg is permanent.

The plaintiff holds the defendant responsible because the facility allegedly failed to retrieve his full medical history prior to performing a procedure, failed to comply with the standard of care used in a left Achilles tendon debridement with a plantar augmentation and failed to monitor plaintiff after his tendon procedure.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks judgment for costs expended and for such other relief as is just and reasonable. He is represented by Jamie L. Boock and Zachary R. Pancoast of Rossiter and Boock LLC in St. Louis.
