Couple claims Barnes-Jewish Hospital failed to sterilize area for lumbar drain

ST. LOUIS — A husband and wife are suing a health care provider, citing alleged negligence and medical malpractice.

Herbert Koonce and Rosetta Koonze filed a complaint Aug. 23 in the St. Louis 22nd Judicial Circuit Court against Barnes-Jewish Hospital, alleging it breached its duty to exercise the requisite standards of medical care in treating patients.

According to the complaint, the plaintiffs allege that Herbert Koonce suffered serious and permanent injuries resulting great pain, disability, economic loss, disability and loss of normal life. The plaintiffs hold Barnes-Jewish Hospital responsible because the defendant allegedly failed to maintain a sterile area to place a lumbar drain and failed to properly clean and sanitize his body, bed and surroundings after he suffered from diarrhea.

The plaintiffs seek damages of more than $50,000, plus costs of this action. They are represented by John J. Hopkins of John J. Hopkins & Associates PC in Alton.
