Couple blames asbestos makers for husband's cancer

Asbestos 05

ST. LOUIS — A husband and wife are suing a number of asbestos products manufacturers, citing alleged negligence.

Manuel Bernard Jones and Fannie Jones filed a complaint on Nov. 2 in the St. Louis 22nd Judicial Circuit Court against Alcatel-Lucent USA Inc., J P Bushnell Packing Supply Co., and other asbestos products manufacturers  alleging that they violated the Federal Employers' Liability Act.

According to the complaint, the plaintiffs allege that during Manuel Bernard Jones' employment from 1970 to 1983, he was exposed to and inhaled or ingested asbestos fibers emanating from certain products manufactured, sold, distributed or installed by the defendants. As a result, on April 1, 2016 he was diagnosed with lung cancer, an asbestos-induced disease.

The plaintiffs hold Alcatel-Lucent, J P Bushnell and others responsible because the defendants allegedly negligently included asbestos fibers in their products when adequate substitutes were available, and failed to provide adequate warnings and instructions concerning the dangers of working with or around products containing asbestos fibers.

The plaintiffs request a trial by jury and seek damages of more than $25,000, punitive damages, and all further relief that the court may deem just and proper. They are represented by Wilson D. Sikes of Napoli Shkolnik PLLC in Edwardsville, Illinois.
