Boy's eyes allegedly damaged by staff at St. Louis Children's Hospital

Medical malpractice 07

ST. LOUIS — Parents and their son are suing St. Louis Children's Hospital, citing alleged negligence.

Benjamin Metz, by and through his parents Lori and Jeffrey Metz filed a complaint on Nov. 9 in the St. Louis Circuit Court against St. Louis Children's Hospital alleging that the healthcare provider's staff negligently failed to recognize the need to protect Benjamin Metz' corneas.

According to the complaint, the plaintiffs allege that on May 23, 2016, Benjamin Metz underwent a LeForte III surgical procedure at the hospital. Following the surgery, the staff allegedly failed to properly lubricate his eyes; and as a result of their alleged negligence, he suffered blurred vision, periorbital swelling, sclera edema and redness. He allegedly sustained permanent corneal damage resulting in permanent loss vision, substantial medical expenses and severe loss of earning capacity.

The plaintiffs hold St. Louis Children's Hospital responsible because the defendant employees allegedly failed to timely apply artificial tear drops to Benjamin Metz eyes as scheduled by his treating physician.

The plaintiffs request a trial by jury and seek judgment against the defendant in excess of $25,000, plus interest, costs, and all other relief that the court may deem just and proper. They are represented by Robert J. Radice of Horas, Radice & Associates PC in St. Louis and Patrick J. Hagerty of Gray, Ritter & Graham PC in St. Louis.
