ST. LOUIS — A consumer has filed a class-action lawsuit against a Delaware-based rental company, citing alleged deceptive trade practices.

Myra Williams, individually and on behalf of all others similarly situated, filed a complaint on Dec. 6 in the St. Louis Circuit Court against Rent-A-Center Inc. alleging that the Delaware corporation violated the Missouri Merchandising Practices Act.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff said that on June 24 Rent-A-Center received a default judgment against her for $420 plus accruing costs and interest; however, she was allegedly issued the summons for the suit by someone not legally appointed to do so. As a result of the defendant's conduct, she had do retain counsel to file a motion to have the default judgment set aside.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury; and seeks damages in excess of $25,000, an order certifying this case as a class action and appointing her as class representative, pre-judgment and post-judgment interest, court costs, and any further relief to which they may be entitled. She is represented by David T. Butsch and Christopher E. Roberts of Butsch Roberts & Associates LLC in Clayton.
