St. Louis police officer accused of negligence in crash

Car accident 34

ST. LOUIS — A motorist is suing the Board of Police Commissioners of the City of St. Louis and Carmesha Calhoun, a police officer, citing alleged negligence.

Cotinna Blackmon filed a complaint on Jan. 15 in the St. Louis Circuit Court against the defendants alleging that Calhoun failed to maintain proper control of the motor vehicle she was driving.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that on Oct. 18, 2016, she was operating a motor vehicle at the intersection of Vandeventer and Lindell streets when Calhoun, who was acting in the course and scope of her employment, negligently caused the vehicle she was driving to collide with the plaintiff's vehicle. She sustained serious, painful and permanent injuries to her head, neck, shoulders, spines and bones.

The plaintiff holds the defendants responsible because Calhoun allegedly failed to maintain vigilant and careful lookout, and failed to stop, reduce speed or swerve to avoid the accident.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury; and seeks damages in a reasonable amount of more than $25,000, plus costs of this action, and all other relief that the court may deem proper and just. She is represented by Theodore H. Hoffman and Steven M. Gelfman of Hoffman & Gelfman Attorneys PC in St. Louis.
