Patient claims Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital to blame for bed sores

Medical malpractice 06

ST. LOUIS — A patient is suing SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital, St. Louis University and others, alleging insufficient measures were taken to prevent injuries.

Alejandro Rivas filed a complaint on Feb. 15 in the St. Louis Circuit Court against the defendants alleging that they negligently deviated from the standards of medical care.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff was placed in a medically induced coma after he was injured in an automobile accident on Dec. 6, 2015. At the time, he was allegedly placed on a metal bed with a vinyl cover, but with no cushioned support. On Dec. 24, his family allegedly pointed out to medical staff that he had irritated, infected and necrotic pressure sores; however, nothing was done to address the issues, according to the suit. As a result, Rivas suffered severe, permanent and progressive injuries that required surgical intervention, mental anguish, depression and anxiety.

The plaintiff holds SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital, St. Louis University and others responsible because they allegedly breached their duties to protect the plaintiff by failing to adequately assess evaluate and treat his bottom/sacral pressure ulcers, and by failing to prevent or provide care for the same.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury; and seeks damages in an amount that is fair and reasonable, plus costs of this action, and any further relief as the court deems just and proper. He is represented by Bryan J. Sanger of Mandel & Mandel LLP in St. Louis.
