Man files suit against Pfizer over allegations that Viagra caused skin cancer

Medical malpractice 07

ST. LOUIS – A Wisconsin resident alleges a prescription drug caused him to develop skin cancer.

Robert Piontek filed a complaint on May 30 in the St. Louis 22nd Judicial Circuit Court against Pfizer Inc. alleging negligence and other counts.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that his physician prescribed Viagra to him in 2000, which he took as needed. In 2012, the suit states he was diagnosed with malignant melanoma. He alleges the defendant knew that taking Viagra increased users' risk of developing melanoma and did not warn doctors or patients of the risk.

The plaintiff holds Pfizer Inc. responsible because the defendant allegedly failed to educate health care providers about the safest use of the drug and failed to properly test the drug before releasing it on the market.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks compensatory and punitive damages, plus interest, costs, attorney's fees and all further relief as the court may deem just and proper. He is represented by John J. Driscoll and Gregory J. Pals of The Driscoll Firm PC in St. Louis.
