ST. LOUIS – A St. Charles County woman alleges she incurred more than $190,000 in medical bills because of injuries sustained when an elevator in a St. Louis building dropped more than 30 floors.

Janet Smith-Hawkes filed a complaint on Aug. 21 in the St. Louis Circuit Court against InvenTrust Properties Corp., et al. alleging negligence.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that on Jan. 11, 2016, she was an invitee at defendants' AT&T building in St. Louis and was riding in an elevator when it descended rapidly from 39th floor and abruptly stopped at the first floor. She alleges the drop caused her to be "thrown and slammed to the floor," the suit states.

She alleges she sustained injuries to her neck, head, back and left shoulder and incurred medical expenses of more than $190,000 as a result of the incident.

The plaintiff holds InvenTrust Properties Corp., et al. responsible because the defendants allegedly failed to maintain the elevator's control and braking systems and failed to adequately repair the elevator.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks damages against the defendants in a fair and reasonable amount, plus costs. She is represented by Alan S. Mandel and Michael J. Sudekum of Mandel & Mandel LLP in St. Louis.
