Select Specialty Hospital accused of wrongful death

Medical malpractice 09

ST. LOUIS — A family is suing multiple healthcare providers, citing alleged insufficient measures were taken to prevent injuries and death.

Jerry Cardwell, Linda Cardwell and other next friends of Dominic Cardwell filed a complaint on Dec. 8 in the St. Louis Circuit Court against Intensiva Hospital of Greater St. Louis Inc., d/b/a Select Specialty Hospital, Barnes Jewish Hospital, and other healthcare providers alleging that they failed to exercise the degree of skill and learning ordinarily exercised by other healthcare providers in treating Jamie Cardwell, deceased.

According to the complaint, the plaintiffs allege that, as a result of not receiving the care promised by the defendants, the plaintiffs' decedent was caused to develop a stage IV sacral pressure sore and died on Jan. 28, 2013. The plaintiffs hold the defendants responsible because they allegedly failed to ensure that the decedent was adequately fed and hydrated, and failed to maintain medical treatment consistent with the decedent's medical condition.

The plaintiffs request a trial by jury; and seek punitive damages of more than $25,000, plus costs of this action, and any other relief as the court may deem just and proper. They are represented by Ray B. Marglous, Robert S. Martin and Sarah H. Hale of Ray B. Marglous PC in St. Louis.
