ST. LOUIS — A young girl's next of kin are suing a space heater manufacturer and distributors, citing alleged negligence and failure to warn.

Candace J. Higgins, individually and as next friend of Caylee Strong, a minor, filed a complaint on Nov. 30 in the St. Louis Circuit Court against Deep Discounts LLC, Deep Discounts Warehouse Retailer LLC, and others, alleging that they failed to exercise ordinary care in manufacturing and marketing a defective space heater.

According to the complaint, Higgins alleges that on Feb. 13, 2015 the family was asleep when a space heater overheated and exploded, causing a fire that resulted in the death of her 8-year-old daughter, Cadis Strong, and injuries to her 7-year-old child, Candace Strong.

In addition to the death of Cadis Strong, Higgins alleges that Candace Strong suffered substantial pain and emotional trauma, and loss of enjoyment of life as a result of the incident.

The plaintiff holds the defendants responsible because they allegedly failed to properly inspect the subject space heater for any defects and failed to warn the general public of the dangers associated with using it.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury; and seeks judgment against the defendants for a fair and reasonable amount in excess of $25,000, plus interest, costs, and any further relief as the court deems just and proper. She is represented by Freeman R. Bosley Jr. of Bosley & Associates LLC in Overland, Missouri and Daniel R. Brown of the Law Offices of Smith Brown LLC in Overland, Missouri.
